In Thailand, overweight & obesity have become increasingly prominent public health priorities with non-communicable disease and risk factors playing a growing role as the country moves through the epidemiological transition from infectious to predominantly chronic disease, diabetes, hormone-related cancers, musculoskeletal and gall-bladder disease.
According to the Ministry of Public Health, Thailand is among the top five Asia-Pacific nations with the number of obese people, and by 2015 Thailand will have a whopping 21 million members of a “fat tummy network”. As for the ranking of obesity in the ASEAN region, Thailand came second (32.2%) after Malaysia, with the highest number of people with the disease. Rising obesity rates are particularly evident in children. Over the past five years the number of obese preschoolers & school-aged children has risen 36% & 15% respectively.

These rising figures are likely caused by the changing dietary and lifestyle patterns in Thailand. Increasing urbanization and industrialization in Thais led to profound changes to an energy-dense and processed foods that are high in sugar, refined carbohydrates, oil fats and animal meats but less in vegetables and fruits. It has also caused a shift towards progressively declined occupational and commuting physical activity, resulting in increased time spent in sedentary activities. The energy imbalance, especially when consuming more calories than the body can burn off, is the immutable physical law that causes OBESITY!
