It is summer!!! It is time to go to the beach. Before you do, you may be wondering if getting out in the sun is good or should you cover up.

Sunlight is a portion of electromagnetic radiation given off by the sun. There are three major components: visible light, ultraviolet (UV) light and infrared radiation. The UV radiation can be subdivided into UVA, UVB and UVC components based on electrophysical properties. The UVA has the longest wavelengths (315–400 nm), but least energetic photons, UVC photons having the shortest wavelengths (100–280 nm) and the highest energy. The UVB wavelengths are falling in between UVA and UVC. The sunlight is predominantly composed of UVA (90%–95%) and UVB (5%–10%) while the UVC does not reach the earth because the atmospheric ozone absorbs its radiation.

What Are the Adverse Effects of Sunlight?

Exposure to solar UV radiation may result in acute and chronic health effects not only on the skin, but also eyes and immune system.

  1. The Effects of UV on the Skin

  2. Short-term Sunlight Exposure Effect on Skin

• Sunburn

• Polymorphic Light Eruption (Sun Allergy)

3. Long-term Sunlight Exposure Effects on Skin

• Premature Aging and Other Skin Damage

• Skin Cancers

• Basal Cell Carcinoma

4. Effect of Sunlight on Eyes: Cataracts and Other Eye Damage

5. Immune Suppression and Increased Infections

What Are the Benefits of Sunlight?

We have been told to cover up in the sun to cut the risk of getting skin cancer. But, now it seems that a little bit of sunshine on your body is actually good for you.

1. Serotonin, Melatonin and Sunlight

2. Vitamin D Production

3. Helps to Prevent Multiple Sclerosis

4. Phototherapy for the Treatment of Skin Disorders
