Expanding into Indonesia

After the successful set up of Spincontrol’s first Asian branch in Thailand which gained recognition and has been well received by producers, we are now ready to open up another branch in Asia. The first reason why we chose Indonesia was because both European and American cosmetic companies have all established their manufacturing facilities here. Since the facilities are here, producers will have to test their products to ensure that the products are up to standard. At the moment, there is only one local clinical testing service provider who provides only basic tests. If producers want to launch a new product, they will have to wait almost half a year to have the product tested. Setting up our company here makes us the first clinical testing service provider in Indonesia that complies with international standards. Our advantage is that we can approach customers before anyone else, and therefore, we are more likely to convince customers. Our expertise and experience, together with the reputation of our parent company in France, will help customers recognize and trust us. Our testing technology is more advanced, while our testing costs are lower due to the fact that we opened up our office here. Another reason why we set up our office in Indonesia is because our business partner “Chemico” has already done a lot of research and has been doing business in Indonesia for a long time. Chemico knows the market, has a customer base, and most importantly, knows what customers want. This makes our job easier and faster. Moreover, this is the first time we joined hands with IDEA Tests Group. If this partnership is successful, we will have the opportunity to work with IDEA Tests Group in other countries. Our office in Indonesia has been operating since March, albeit a soft opening so that our staff can test out the equipment and machineries, as well as try running the business. Meanwhile, our grand opening is scheduled for August. In the beginning, we will provide basic cosmetic evaluation services, such as whitening, and will later on expand our services if customers show increased interest. Business strategy We will use the same management format as that used in Thailand, but will modify it to fit with Indonesian consumer behavior. For example, we take into consideration that Indonesia is a Muslim country and they have to wash their faces five times a day before praying. As a result, the features of our beauty products will conform to consumer behavior in this regard.

Business obstacles

Customers still lack understanding and do not see the need for product testing. We have to provide them with a lot of information and knowledge. At the same time, public authorities have set up strict and complex rules and regulations. We, therefore, have to ensure that authorities accept our protocol. Attaining product testing not only complies with authorities’ rules and regulations, it is also a necessary and important marketing tool as it informs consumers whether the product has the same properties as that specified by the producer or not. Another major problem in doing business in Indonesia is that their infrastructure is not yet complete, rules and regulations change continuously. What we need is “time”. The clinical testing business not only depends on equipment and technology, but also on expertise and experience, at which Spincontrol is very confident of its strength in this area. We have to listen and adhere to customers’ needs. If they want to test various products, we have to be able to serve them. I ask for no more than two years to evaluate our performance and determine the

direction and future plan, as well as adjust to the needs of our customers in Indonesia. We have plans to expand our business to other countries in Asia, such as the Philippines. However, everything needs time. Every standard used in the Asian offices must be the same as that used in our office in France. European and American producers who wish to expand their market into Asia, and even local producers, all want precise and accurate product test results.
